 This is an excerpt from an e-mail from Mike to mom dated Friday, July 9, 1999.   This was the first time anyone had received any correspondence since he had arrived in Africa on Thursday, July 1, 1999.  The same day he sent this e-mail, he also mailed out a postcard.
